La chiesa ha una lunghissima storia: fondata come rozza, piccola cappella alla fine del quarto secolo, venne riedificata in forme eleganti e preziose entro la metà del VI. Nel 962 l'isola fu assediata dal re tedesco Ottone I di Sassonia che voleva ridurre a obbedienza Berengario II, re d'Italia. Nell'isola si trovava solo la regina Willa che, dopo alcune settimane di coraggiosa resistenza, cedette a Ottone. In quel frangente la basilica venne forse danneggiata seriamente; in ogni caso si decise di ampliarla e renderla ancora più vistosa tra l'XI e il XII secolo. Questa è la chiesa che oggi vediamo, perfettamente conservata e solo in parte rivestita di decorazioni barocche che ne celano l'anima schiettamente romanica. La cripta, contente le spoglie di San Giulio, primo evangelizzatore del territorio, venne ricavata sotto l'antico altare alla fine del Seicento. La basilica è ricchissima di affreschi, tele e opere lignee d'età diversa. Un autentico gioiello è il prezioso pulpito in serpentino verde di Oira realizzato in età romanica. ---Obbiettivo Sigma 15mm---
