Tra le sculture più visitate del Duomo di Milano ve n'è una che desta sempre grande interesse e curiosità da parte dei milioni di visitatori che ogni anno percorrono le navate del Monumento. È la statua di “San Bartolomeo scorticato”, eseguita dallo scultore Marco d'Agrate nel 1562 per la Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, che si colloca attualmente fra l'altare della Presentazione e quello di sant'Agnese, poggiata su di un alto piedistallo, nel braccio destro del transetto della Cattedrale. San Bartolomeo è uno dei dodici apostoli di Gesù, giustiziato per la sua fede cristiana, qui raffigurato secondo l'iconografia che lo identifica a seguito del supplizio subìto. Il santo infatti, scorticato vivo, porta sulle spalle e intorno al corpo quello che sembra un drappo mentre in realtà è la sua pelle, chiaro riferimento alla tortura inflitta dai suoi carnefici. Fino al XIII-XIV secolo l'apostolo veniva rappresentato vestito con libro e coltello nelle mani, in allusione al Vangelo proclamato e al martirio patito. Fu dal Rinascimento in poi che si accentuò la raffigurazione del supplizio, mentre l'iconografia del santo con la propria pelle staccata dalla carne viene definitivamente consacrata dopo che Michelangelo (sec. XVI) così lo rappresentò nel Giudizio Universale della Cappella Sistina in Vaticano. L'opera di Marco d'Agrate, non affronta l'introspezione psicologica, né la testimonianza di profonda fede espressa dal martirio di Bartolomeo, ma si inserisce in un filone d'interesse cinquecentesco: lo studio dell'anatomia umana e la rappresentazione. La prima opera scientifica di anatomia di Andrea Vesalio, redatta attraverso lo studio autoptico del corpo umano e la pratica della dissezione dei cadaveri, fu pubblicata a Venezia nel 1453. La statua si rivela infatti come un'esercitazione, un'attenta descrizione ed un virtuoso saggio accademico della muscolatura e della struttura del corpo umano. Ai piedi della statua, una breve incisione riporta: “Non me Praxiteles, sed Marcus finxit Agrates”, in riferimento al “timore” dello scultore che presumeva l'opera potesse essere attribuita per stile e maestria non a lui stesso, ma a Prassitele, uno dei più abili e famosi scultori ateniesi della Grecia Antica. Un'altra versione di san Bartolomeo, sempre opera di Marco d'Agrate, datata 1556, si trova sulla facciata della Certosa di Pavia, dove lo scultore lavorò a lungo realizzando molte statue. “San Bartolomeo Scorticato”, un tempo all'esterno del Duomo, richiamò da subito l'interesse di fedeli e visitatori, cosa che, insieme con al delicatezza della finitura superficiale, suggerì la necessità del trasporto dell'opera all'interno, nel retrocoro della Cattedrale, poi nel suo odierno posizionamento a seguito di un'ordinazione capitolare del 1664 che disponeva “un luogo più acconcio all'ammirazione per gli intelligenti dell'arte”. A distanza di quasi cinque secoli dalla sua realizzazione, la statua di San Bartolomeo di Marco d'Agrate non finisce di meravigliare e di stupire i visitatori provenienti da tutti i continenti.
