Piazza Broletto - MANTOVA Piccola e suggestiva, fu compresa nel perimetro cittadino verso la fine del XII secolo e divenne nel successivo, fino al 1272, con l'attigua piazza delle Erbe, il centro della vita comunale. Sul lato occidentale è chiusa dalla sequenza delle case porticate che fiancheggiano la via Broletto: il palazzo Andreasi (fine XV secolo), con cornicione in cotto; la casa della Stadera, cioè della pesa pubblica, con sbiaditi affreschi originari in facciata; la quattrocentesca sede dell'Università (o corporazione) dei Mercanti; al di sopra dei tetti delle case si erge, maestosa, la cupola della chiesa di S. Andrea. Sul lato opposto è il palazzo della Masseria (occupato dall'omonimo ristorante: in una sala interna sono venuti alla luce affreschi degli inizi del '400 raffiguranti la città come appariva all'epoca). Sul lato meridionale dominano la piazza la mole del palazzo del Podestà, sede del governo podestarile prima dell'avvento dei Bonacolsi, costruito nel 1227 e rimaneggiato nel '400 (in una nicchia sulla facciata è la statua duecentesca rappresentante Virgilio in cattedra), e l'alta torre comunale alla cui base è affiancata una piccola costruzione di tono manieristico. All'estremità sinistra del palazzo è addossato il voltone a tutto sesto dell'arengario (inizi XIV secolo), sormontato da un ordine di trifore e da una loggia di nove arcatelle su colonnine marmoree. Al centro della piazza, nel punto in cui nel 1890 venne scavato il primo pozzo artesiano per fornire acqua potabile alla città, è la fontana dei Delfini. (fonte Touring Club Italiano)
