Questa è una foto d'archivio che pubblico per ricordare la grande Valentina Cortese che, si è spenta oggi nella sua casa di Milano a 96 primavere. Da quando aveva perso il suo unico figlio nel 2015, vivere le era diventato sempre più pesante. In didascalia, un mio ricordo personale tratto da un mio libro di teatro. Forse è il più bel complimento che si possa fare ad un'attrice. Ha un'etichetta di fanée, di liberty, una certa patina di divismo. In effetti, ora che l'ho difronte, mi riesce difficile soffiare su quest'antica polvere un po' dannunziana, decadente, ma tutto sommato è la sua cornice ideale, quella in cui si muove a suo agio, vaga e un po' languente. Questo è il segreto del suo fascino. Una maschera perfetta, senza sbavature, dove si nasconde una donna con le sue contraddizioni, le sue paure, le fragilità, la solitudine, la gioia e la disperazione di vivere. Siamo nel suo appartamento, affacciato su uno degli angoli più suggestivi di Milano; nel parco gli alberi cedono le foglie al vento d'autunno: è lo scenario ideale per la sua commedia, che recita con naturalezza. Senti che è spontanea, che è sincera, nonostante gli anni, ha un animo infantile. Su un tavolino basso con ampi drappeggi bevono l'ultima luce del crepuscolo, in preziose cornici d'argento, i suoi sacerdoti, quelli con i quali ha celebrato il suo rito più sacro: il teatro. C'è uno Zeffirelli giovane, un Giorgio Strehler più umano, perché la fotografia allontana il genio e avvicina l'uomo. E infine, le guance scavate di Eduardo. Si porta dentro immagini poetiche che credo nascano in lei dalla convinzione che la vita è meravigliosa. E Valentina è un'adorabile folle che spesso minaccia di lasciare il teatro per vivere un po' tra le quinte la poesia della vita. Le chiedo: “Quanti anni vorresti avere?” Risponde: “Sempre meno di quelli che ho. Come tutti. Ma la storia dell'eterna giovinezza mi fa paura. Sarebbe meraviglioso fermarsi un po' di più su un momento di felicità e di verità. Se qualcosa potesse durare un momento di più, in questa vita, non chiederei di meglio”. Questa fragile gardenia di ferro ha molto sviluppato l'umorismo, sa prendersi in giro. Vive.
