Albenga era l'antica capitale della potente tribù ligure degli Ingauni, da cui prese il nome di Albium Ingauni ( il nome mutò poi in Albingaunum, in Albingauna e infine in Albenga). Le Torri antiche sono divenute il simbolo che rappresenta la città di Albenga. Albenga ha l'appellativo di " Città delle cento torri", e presenta uno dei centri storici più suggestivi e ben conservati della Riviera ligure di ponente, per gran parte ancora circondata da mura e nel quale svettano numerose torri, palazzi e altre pregevoli architetture di epoca medioevale.
