Il collasso dell'impero romano fu dovuto a diversi fattori: il crollo demografico, per far fronte al quale si inaugurò una persecuzione fiscale che distrusse l'economia, si cercò quindi di ovviare tramite una massiccia immigrazione trascurando peró di governarla. I legionari, tornati a casa dopo anni di leva andarono a ingrossare la plebe urbana, cui “panem et circenses” gratuiti non mancavano. Le virtù stoiche della pietas e della fidelitas alla res publica vennero meno, e il contagio, partì dalle élites. Nelle classi alte si diffuse l'edonismo, per cui i figli sono una palla al piede. Coi costumi ellenistici dilagarono contraccezione, concubinaggio e divorzio, tant'è che Augusto dovette emanare leggi contro il celibato. Nel II secolo dopo Cristo l'aborto divenne la misura estrema per nascondere relazioni illecite, solo i cristiani vi si opponevano, ma erano pochi e pure periodicamente decimati dalle persecuzioni. Gente da tassare e/o da mandare a difendere il limes ce n'era sempre meno. Le regioni di confine divennero lande semivuote, tentazione fortissima per i barbari. Si pensò allora di arruolare i Barbari concedendo loro i benefici della civiltà romana. A questo ben si prestó un'imponente ondata migratoria di Goti avvenuta nel 376 D.C.. Abitualmente, nei confronti delle popolazioni sottomesse, i Romani esercitavano una strategia inclusiva. Preferivano farne cittadini romani e assimilarne la cultura, per evitare future ribellioni. Gli ufficiali militari che dovevano garantire loro supporto e provviste - un'antica rete di supporto ai migranti - si rivelarono corrotti e approfittarono dei mezzi stanziati per i nuovi arrivati, vendendo le provvigioni al mercato nero. I Goti si trasformarono in carnefici e il 9 agosto del 378 d.C., ad Adrianopoli, in Tracia 30 mila soldati dell'impero, furono massacrati da essi. Ma ormai era troppo tardi. Il collasso dell'Impero Romano era segnato. I parallelismi con la situazione attuale sono molteplici e vengono inaspriti dal fatto che oggi qualcuno pensa che un giorno un'altra cultura possa essere la nostra, ignorando la possibilità che questa possa annientarci e come già successo nel passato possa segnare il fine di una civiltá.
