Il Fistione turco è presente in Europa, Asia e Africa. Predilige comunque le zone settentrionali, anche se difficilmente si spinge a nord del 55° parallelo. In Italia nidifica in Sardegna e in altre residue aree umide del nord Italia, in passato diffuse sull'intera Pianura padana. Il suo nido è generalmente immerso nella vegetazione palustre ed è ricoperto di piumino, che la femmina si strappa addirittura dal ventre.
