Castello dell'abate Le prime notizie ufficiali sul territorio risalgono al 977, quando il vescovo di Paestum Pandone vendette alcuni possedimenti terrieri che facevano capo alle chiese di Santa Maria de Gulia, Santa Maria Litus Maris e San Giovanni di Tresino a marinai di Atrani. In queste terre ci fu anche la presenza dei monaci basiliani profughi dell'oriente, la cappella di Santa Sofia ne è una testimonianza. I Longobardi e i Normanni sono tra le popolazioni che hanno lasciato nella zona un forte segno tangibile della loro presenza. I Longobardi inizialmente depredarono queste terre, ma dopo la loro conversione al cristianesimo operata dai benedettini ne divennero i benefattori attraverso l'imposizione feudale. Essi, data la loro profonda devozione per san Michele Arcangelo, denominarono colle Sant'Angelo l'altura su cui sarebbe sorta Castellabate. Nel 1028 il principe Guaimario III di Salerno scacciò i Saraceni definitivamente[19]. Nel 1072 fu il principe longobardo Gisulfo II di Salerno a donare le terre di Castellabate all'abate della badia di Cava Leone I. Il lavoro svolto dai benedettini fu talmente meritorio durante la dominazione normanna, soprattutto per le bonifiche operate, che Guglielmo II di Puglia nel settembre del 1123 gli concesse il privilegio di costruire una fortezza per difendere le popolazioni locali dagli attacchi dei pirati saraceni, i quali compivano frequenti scorrerie nella zona.
