Aeshna cyanea (Muller, 1764) Dimensioni: lunghezza: 70-75 mm, apertura alare 95-115 mm. Descrizione della specie: è una libellula della famiglia delle Aeshnidae (Rambur, 1842), sono una famiglia di insetti dell'ordine degli Odonata (infraordine Anisoptera). E' uno dei più grandi rappresentanti della famiglia, di questa famiglia fanno parte le libellule più robuste. Il maschio adulto presenta addome dai caratteristici disegni bruni, verdi e azzurri (punti verdi disposti a coppie in contrasto con la porzione, terminale e laterale dell'addome, blu-azzurra). La femmina, invece, è bruna con disegni, di color verde-acqua, simili a quelli del maschio. Il torace, in entrambi i sessi, è verde e, in visione laterale, presenta due ampie bande nere: una completa, l'altra interrotta a metà. Il margine posteriore degli occhi è scuro con due caratteristici punti gialli. I cerci del maschio, visti lateralmente, si ampliano nella metà apicale per poi restringersi a formare un "becco" verso il basso. Sempre nel maschio il "triangolo anale", sull'ala posteriore, è formato da 3-6 celle ma raramente 2 come nelle altre Aeshna. Il pterostigma è corto (circa 3 mm) e comunque due volte più lungo che largo. Appartiene alla famiglia la specie Tetracanthagyna plagiata, la libellula più grande al mondo Distribuzione e habitat: presente in tutta Italia, meno comune in Sicilia, Sardegna e Puglia. Frequenta diversi ambienti, anche urbani, prediligendo zone boscose, radure, stagni. Il volo di caccia è caratteristico: irregolare, radente con addome leggermente curvato verso il basso. I maschi sono territoriali. Periodo di attività: adulti presenti principalmente in luglio-agosto. Raramente si osserva questa libellula volare prima di luglio o in autunno inoltrato
