Nell'estremo nordest dell'India, nella Ziro Valley, vivono gli Apatani, una tribù nota per la bellezza delle loro donne; in passato, per non farsele rapire, le imbruttivano con tatuaggi sul volto e sopratutto con la pratica del "Tani", e cioè l'inserimento di due grossi tappi neri nelle narici nasali, non appena avuto il primo ciclo. Gli apatani hanno sempre mantenuto una certa distanza dalle altre culture che li circondano e questa tradizione e durata nel corso dei secoli ed è stata mantenuta fino alla fine degli anni 60. La donna ritratta non è una eccezione: quelle anziane sono tutte cosi. Ora tale usanza è però del tutto abbandonata, e nel giro di un paio di decenni non né resterà traccia se non nelle fotografie.
