Area Natural Protegida Peninsula Valdès (Patagonia Argentina) Il Cathartes aura, conosciuto anche come avvoltoio tacchino, è senza dubbio l'uccello rapace più diffuso sul territorio americano. Esso raggiunge una lunghezza massima di circa 80 cm con una discreta apertura alare che oscilla tra i 170 ed i 185 cm. Il corpo è ricoperto da un fitto piumaggio nero intenso fatta eccezione per la testa, completamente nuda e dal peculiare colore rosso. Abili volatori ed acuti osservatori, gli Avvoltoi collo rosso sono in grado di rimanere in volo lasciandosi trasportare dall'aria anche per sei ore consecutive rimanendo sempre attenti ad esplorare il territorio sottostante in cerca di carogne in putrefazione di cui nutrirsi (si ritiene che il nome greco kathartes, purificazione, derivi proprio dalla tendenza dell'animale a “ripulire” la natura da animali morti ed in decomposizione).
