Quercus ilex L. - Leccio, Elce Albero sempreverde, xerofilo e monoico, il più delle volte con portamento arboreo (di rado arbustivo o cespuglioso), può raggiungere i 25-27 (30) m di altezza, con chioma globosa ed espansa; il tronco è eretto e la corteccia è liscia e grigiastra negli esemplari giovani, più scura, screpolata e fittamente divisa in placchette tetragonali (almeno sul fusto) a maturità. I rami sono cenerino-pubescenti fino al secondo anno di età, crescendo, diventano glabri, scurendosi. L'apparato radicale è fittonante nei primissimi anni di vita della pianta, ramificandosi poi con l'età, diventando imponente e tale da consentire alla pianta di sopravvivere anche in ambienti estremi, quali suoli rocciosi o pareti verticali. E' pianta molto longeva, potendo superare i 1000 anni di età. Le foglie sono coriacee, con un breve picciolo tomentoso, e con stipole brune di breve durata; sono verdi-scure e lucide nella pagina superiore, grigio-feltrose (più raramente glabrescenti) in quella inferiore, di forma variabile, da lanceolate a ellittiche, con margine da intero a dentato, e in quest'ultimo caso, non di rado, sono pungenti, soprattutto negi esemplari più giovani; l'apice è in genere acuto, ma può essere anche mucronato. In uno stesso esemplare possono coesistere foglie di forma e dimensioni molto eterogenee. Fiorisce da Aprile a Giugno.
