La statua del sileno (dio del fiume Marsia) fu rinvenuta presso la Villa delle Vignacce nel Parco Regionale dell'Appia Antica, nel corso di indagini archeologiche intraprese nel 2009 dalla Sovrintendenza Capitolina in convenzione con l'American Institute for Roman Culture, anche se le indagini nella villa suburbana erano iniziate già nel 2006. Marsia era stato trovato dagli archeologi adagiato sul pavimento a mosaico di un piccolo ambiente, ricoperto da uno strato di terra sabbiosa mista a detriti con numerosi frammenti di marmo. Il mito racconta che un giorno la dea Atena, dopo aver inventato l'aulòs (un flauto a doppia canna), è invitata a suonarlo in un convivio di divinità olimpiche. Soffiando nello strumento, il gonfiore delle guance le provoca una grottesca deformazione dei lineamenti del viso che suscita l'ilarità di Era ed Afrodite, da sempre sue rivali in bellezza. Molto irritata, Atena getta via, maledicendolo, il flauto che, raccolto prontamente da Marsia, rivela in lui pregevoli doti musicali. La vanità, così, spinge il sileno a sfidare Apollo in una gara musicale in cui ha presto la peggio non avendo calcolato l'astuzia del dio e i suoi celebri stratagemmi. La punizione per la superbia di Marsia è terribile, una vera tortura, così descritta da Publio Ovidio Nasone: Qualcuno ricorderà il satiro che suonando il flauto, inventato dalla dea del Tritone, fu sconfitto in una gara e punito dal figlio di Latona. Gridava “Perché mi scortichi?” “Ahi mi pento! Il flauto non valeva tanto!” Urlava mentre gli veniva strappata la pelle da tutto il corpo e non c'era che un'unica ferita: il sangue colava ovunque, i muscoli restavano visibili, le vene pulsanti brillavano senza più un lembo di carne; si sarebbero potuti contare le interiora palpitanti e le fibre traslucide sul petto. Lo piansero i Fauni campagnoli, le divinità dei boschi, i satiri suoi fratelli, l'Olimpo a lui caro, assieme a quelli che su quei monti pascolavano greggi lanute e mandrie cornute. Il suolo fertile s'inzuppò delle lacrime che cadevano raccogliendole e assorbendole fin nel profondo delle proprie vene; poi le convertì in un corso d'acqua, riversandolo all'aria aperta. Così quel fiume che da lì scorre tra le rive in declivio verso il mare ondoso, fu chiamato Marsia, il più limpido fiume della Frigia.
