La venulazione alare è rossa. Le femmine hanno colorazione discontinua bruno-chiara e venulazione alare anteriore giallastra. Ambedue i sessi possiedono una macchia rosso-arancio alla base delle ali, più estesa nelle posteriori, ridotta o assente nelle anteriori. Gli adulti si osservano tra aprile e novembre. Frequenta le acque ferme o quasi ferme di stagni, laghi, cave, canali e fiumare, dalla pianura alle quote collinari poco elevate.
