Il ricetto, sistema di fortificazione, è nato per esigenze storiche a difesa del territorio. E può essere: una struttura organizzata autonomamente, che si identifica nel borgo antico; o essere una parte integrata nel borgo antico costituendone il sistema difensivo; oppure nascere sin dall'inizio in stretta connessione con castelli signorili. Il ricetto per eccellenza nel Biellese è il Ricetto di Candelo, risalente al XII-XIII secolo. Ha una struttura pressoché pentagonale, una cinta muraria perimetrale, circa 470 m., con quattro torri cilindriche e una quadrata ai vertici più una torre-porta d'accesso. E' costituito da 14 isolati quasi tutti doppi. La parte viaria (rue) è costituita da 5 vie (rue) parallele e due perpendicolari. Tutt'intorno alle mura corre la via di lizza che permetteva di accorrere alle mura da qualsiasi punto del ricetto.
