La Superformance è un'Azienda Californiana specializzata in repliche di famose vetture sportive del passato e fra queste vi è questa Ford GT 40 Mk I (1° serie 1964-'69) della fotografia. Detta vettura viene fornita completa ed omologata per girare su strada… oltre naturalmente che per poter partecipare a gare sportive. La scelta del gruppo motore/cambio è lasciata all'acquirente che può optare per un motore Ford V8 “small block” (inferiore ai 6600 cm3) o per un propulsore di derivazione Ford approntato dalla Roush Performance… se desidera qualche ulteriore cavallo in più… mentre per il cambio sono disponibili i modelli a 5 marce RBT e ZF. Il 40 che si trova nella sigla della vettura è riferito alla sua altezza, cioè 40 pollici... praticamente un metro... e questo influisce un po' sulla comodità dei piloti di alta statura... difatti la vettura è dotata della "Gurney bubble"... la bolla di Gurney. Trattasi della parte semisferica che si trova sopra l'abitacolo dal lato conduttore. E' un'applicazione fatta per permettere una guida più comoda ai conduttori di alta statura e prende il nome da Dan Gurney, uno dei piloti che con questa vettura vinse la 24 Ore di Le Mans nel 1967 in coppia con Anthony Joseph Foyt Jr. In quella gara la vettura raggiunse la velocità di 343 chilometri orari... il record di quell'edizione in cui gareggiò con il numero 6... quello posto su questa replica. La GT 40 vinse anche le edizioni 1966, '68 e '69 della prestigiosa gara sul suolo francese. Le forme della Ford GT 40 “pare” abbiano ispirato la progettazione di un'altra famosa vettura… la Lamborghini Miura P 400 (1966-'73). Se le si guarda però “sotto il vestito”… a parte la differente motorizzazione queste vetture hanno un'altra notevole differenza: mentre la GT 40 ha un telaio tubolare la Miura ha un telaio in lamiera scatolata… più facile da costruire e gestire. Questa immagine venne scattata mentre era in corso un temporale.
