Proseguendo a nord da Caraz lungo il Callejón de Huaylas, si attraversa il Canyon del Pato. È qui che la Cordillera Blanca e la Cordillera Negra arrivano a sfiorarsi, in una sorta di schermaglia tra giganti di roccia separati in alcuni tratti soltanto da 15 m, con vertiginose pareti a picco che sprofondano fino a 1000 m. La strada , in gran parte sterrata, serpeggia lungo un percorso inciso nella roccia viva, attraversando 35 tunnel scavati a mano nella roccia ad una corsia e chiaramente senza illuminazione e sale dai 500 mt ad oltre 2000 metri.
