Di origine asiatica, è stato incautamente rilasciato nel 1995 sulle sponde del Lago di Varese. La caratteristica principale della specie è il becco corto e tozzo simile a quello dei pappagalli. La colorazione delle guance e della gola è tipicamente marrone-rossiccia (morfismo rosso), anche se la popolazione italiana presenta una maggioranza di soggetti con colorazione grigia o intermedia (morfismo grigio). In un primo momento il suo nome scientifico è stato Paradoxornis webbianus della famiglia Timalidi, ma nel 2014 a seguito di indagini molecolari è stato assegnato alla famiglia Silvidi col nome di Sinosuthora webbiana. E' presente in Italia solo nella provincia di Varese.
