La laguna Orchococha, conosciuta anche come “laguna maschio” è situata ad una altitudine di 3850 mt s.l.m. Fa parte assieme alla laguna Chinanchoca , (laguna femmina), delle lagune Llaganuco. Entrambe sono all'interno del Parco Nazionale Huascarán (PNH). Il Parco si estende su una superficie di 340.000 ettari con la catena montuosa tropicale più alta del mondo. Rappresenta anche una delle zone con maggior diversità biologica e culturale del Perù. Il Parco fu costituito nel 1975 e dichiarato Riserva della biosfera dall'UNESCO nel 1977. Nel 1985, è stato inserito nella lista del Patrimonio naturale dell'umanità dall'UNESCO.
