L'esistenza del monastero di S. Maria del Bosco, viene fatta risalire al XIII sec. La prima memoria documentata risale al 21 Giugno 1308, data in cui il romitorio ottiene l'autorizzazione ecclesiastica dal vescovo di Agrigento Bertoldo de Labro, il quale il 20 luglio 1308 visita l'eremo concedendo un'indulgenza a coloro che ne visitassero la chiesa. Domenica 22 Luglio 1309, lo stesso vescovo procedeva alla consacrazione della chiesa decorandola col titolo di Basilica. La chiesa medievale si estendeva “dinanzi il vestibolo del nuovo tempio e vi si vedono ancora oggi i ruderi dei mattoni del pavimento e due antiche sepolture”. Sotto la regola benedettina, a partire dalla seconda metà del '300, iniziano le fortune, anche economiche, del monastero. Frate Olimpio da Giuliana attesta nella sua relazione molti lasciti, con dovizia di particolari, nel corso degli anni, a favore del monastero. Nel 1433 il Re Alfonso concesse all'abbazia la completa esenzione fiscale. Seguirono negli anni successivi, secondo le linee di una storia comune a tutti i monasteri, grazie e concessioni tanto da parte regia quanto da parte pontificia, oltre ad un numero considerevole di donazioni, a volte seguite anche da contestazioni da parte degli eredi dei donatori, volendo essi riappropriarsi dei “loro” beni, mentre continuavano le contese con il vescovo agrigentino il quale ripetutamente cercava di affermare i suoi diritti. Image Nel 1491 S. Maria del Bosco fu incorporata da Papa Innocenzo VIII alla congregazione benedettina di Monte Oliveto (benedettini bianchi), come priore fu inviato dall'abate Generale della Congregazione, ad attuare la riforma, Fra Michele da Volterra accompagnato da nove monaci, mentre il vecchio abate Placido Castagneda veniva costituito abate perpetuo, con il privilegio di potere indossare a vita, insieme ad altri due o tre frati l'abito benedettino nero. La storia artistica del monastero qual lo si vede oggi inizia appunto dall'insediamento degli olivetani, mentre il dominio del monastero diveniva il puntello economico della congregazione olivetana in Sicilia. L'accresciuta potenza determinò notevoli contrasti; da una parte, clero contro fisco per far rispettare l'esenzione tributaria spettante ai beni ecclesiastici dipendenti direttamente da Roma, dall'altra, clero isolano contro abati continentali e curia romana per evitare che le rendite del monastero fossero spese fuori dalla Sicilia, come di fatto spesso era accaduto. Gli olivetani di Sicilia miravano ad una totale autonomia, non volendo rispondere fiscalmente ne al governo vice-reale ne alla curia romana. Furono fondati e dotati con rendite dell'abbazia, a Palermo i monasteri dello Spasimo, di S. Spirito, di S. Giorgio in Kemonia, a Marineo il monastero di S. Maria, a Chiusa Sclafani di S. Leonardo, a Giuliana della SS.ma Trinità, per non parlare delle chiese, cappelle e i numerosi ospizi tenuti in vari siti. L'Abate di S. Maria del Bosco occupava il quarantacinquesimo seggio in Parlamento e di conseguenza doveva partecipare ai donativi, ma allentatasi l'autorità della corona nel sec. XVII l'Abate ricusò di intervenire ai parlamenti e contribuire ai donativi appellandosi all'autorità pontificia. Questa infine prevalse riuscendo ad ottenere nel 1682 una sentenza favorevole all'immunità del monastero. La nuova chiesa fu terminata nel 1757 come è tradizione, e come si cerca di dimostrare, sui cartoni dell'architetto napoletano Luigi Vanvitelli, autore dell'Albergo dei Poveri di Palermo nonchè del celebre Palazzo Reale di Caserta, in una sala del quale si dice sia dipinta in affresco il monastero e la chiesa del bosco di Calatamauro.
