Obelisco Incompiuto Cava di Assuan . Durante la visita alle rovine dei siti monumentali sparsi per tutto l'Egitto, è raro fermarsi a riflettere sulle varie fasi necessarie alla loro realizzazione. L'obelisco incompiuto costituisce una rara opportunità di considerare questo complesso processo e la difficoltà di dare forma ai grandi blocchi di pietra che hanno fatto parte della maggior parte dei monumenti presenti in Egitto. Questo enorme obelisco avrebbe raggiunto l'altezza di 140 piedi, il più grande mai costruito in Egitto. Fu realizzato in granito rosso di Assuan, lo stesso che decora molti dei principali monumenti di epoca faraonica, e per il quale la città è famosa. Il più grande di tutti i monoliti in Egitto, comunque, non è mai stato ultimato. Durante l'ultima fase della sua realizzazione, furono scoperte delle fenditure nella roccia, motivo per cui fu abbandonato in una delle antiche cave di Assuan, ultimato su tre lati, ma ancorato al letto di roccia sul quarto lato.
