Fusto eretto, semplice o poco ramificato, glabro ma talvolta con rada peluria fioccosa, clavato sotto il capolino. Foglie basali lineari, alterne, intere, parallelinervie con margine ondulato larghe 5 mm e lunghe 10 - 15 cm; le caulinari più piccole (4-10 cm) con guaina amplessicaule e a lamina canalicolata a base allargata. Infiorescenza in capolino solitario di 6-7 cm di Ø, portato da un lungo peduncolo ingrossato all'apice; fiori tutti ligulati, ermafroditi, di 2,3-2,6 cm, con 5 denti, di colore viola-bruno o porporino-scuro più raramente bianco o lillacino; brattee involucrali (8-9) lineari poste su un solo ordine, più lunghe (2,5-4 cm) delle ligule. Stami ad antere caudate; stilo sottile e biforcato. Il frutto è una cipsela (achenio), di colore bruno scuro con coste spinulose, che si assottiglia in un lungo di becco di 14-24 mm sormontato di un pappo di setole piumose di 25-35 mm.
