Caral è un grande insediamento presente nella valle di Supe, Provincia di Barranca, circa 200 km a nord di Lima. Caral è una delle più antiche città delle Americhe, ed è un sito molto studiato della civiltà Norte Chico. La civiltà di Norte Chico, rappresenta la più antica forma di organizzazione sociale del Sud America, costituita da una decina di popolazioni, che vissero in quel territorio tra il 3000 ed il 1800 a.C., costruendo palazzi e piramidi, città e sistemi di irrigazione. Una società evoluta, che influenzò tutte le successive civiltà andine, compresa quella degli Incas. La loro scomparsa è probabilmente dovuta alla perdita di fertilità del territorio in cui vivevano. Il complesso è formato da diverse costruzioni, tra le quali spiccano sei piramidi e la piazza a struttura circolare. Si è sviluppata in concomitanza con il sorgere delle civiltà antiche della Mesopotamia, dell'Egitto, della Cina e dell'India. Nel 2009 il sito è stato inserito tra i patrimoni dell'umanità dell'UNESCO grazie alla sua importanza culturale.
