Il Gabbiano sul Cane Solo casuale l'accostamento di questi due animali, dato che questa affascinante nebulosa è chiamata "Gabbiano" (IC2177) per il suo aspetto e si trova nella costellazione del Cane Maggiore, ad oltre 3000 anni luce.
