Lo zebù è molto importante nella cultura malgascia, in cui simboleggia una manifestazione esteriore di ricchezza. Possedere uno zebù, o - meglio ancora - un branco di zebù è un segno di successo e dello status sociale del proprietario. E' di grande aiuto in agricoltura dove viene utilizzato per "calpestare" i campi prima del trapianto del riso (cereale fondamentale in Madagascar). Quando la terra è abbastanza inzuppata il contadino fa passare e ripassare uno o due zebù nel suo campo, così da rammollire e preparare la terra ad accogliere le piccole piantine di riso. Lo zebù viene poi utilizzato come mezzo di trasporto ecologico. In un Paese povero in cui sono poche le persone che possiedono un veicolo a motore, e in cui il prezzo dei carburanti è mirabolante - circa 1 euro al litro - l'omby (nome malgascio dello zebù) molto spesso sostituisce la macchina. Agganciato a un carretto e in cambio di un po' d'erba porta la gente del posto sui sentieri sinuosi della boscaglia, senza dover fare benzina!
