Sedentario, migratore e dispersivo, l'usignolo di fiume frequenta i terreni paludosi ricchi di vegetazione emergente, le rive di laghi, stagni, fiumi e altre zone con presenza di acqua, in un areale di riproduzione compreso tra l'Eurasia centromeridionale e l'Africa settentrionale. Sverna a sud fino al bacino del Mediterraneo, e nel nostro Paese nidifica con alcune centinaia di migliaia di coppie.
