Comunemente rientrano in questa categoria di veicoli le biciclette, i risciò, ecc. Dopo pochi anni, intorno al 1815, il nobile tedesco Karl Friedrich Drais von Sauerbronn inventò la draisina, attrezzata già di una sella e di un manubrio per governare la ruota anteriore e chiamata in tedesco Laufmaschine. Fece il suo debutto il 12 giugno 1817. Ottenne un brevetto nel 1818. Era costruita interamente in legno.
