L'Altro Perù: il Nord - I Sarcofagi Carajilla Tra le gole ripide delle Ande, e le immense foreste pluviali della regione di Amazonas, nel Perù del Nord, si trovano sorprendenti siti storici che documentano la storia del popolo Chachapoya, che dovette arrendersi agli Inca, poco prima dell'arrivo dei conquistadores spagnoli. Questo misterioso popolo, di cui poco si sa, è conosciuto solo con il nome dato a loro dagli Inca, Chachapoya appunto. Venivano anche chiamati guerrieri delle nubi, soprannome dato loro per indicarne il carattere bellicoso, in difesa del loro nebbioso territorio. Uno dei siti archeologici più straordinari di questo popolo è quello di Karajia, dove sei sarcofagi (prima erano sette ma uno è caduto alcuni anni fa) guardano fieramente verso il baratro che si apre ai loro piedi. I monumenti funebri si trovano in una posizione quasi irraggiungibile, ad oltre 2000 metri di altezza. Il luogo non facilmente accessibile, sopra la gola di un fiume, ha preservato questi straordinari reperti di una civiltà quasi perduta. I “Purunmachos”, come la gente del posto chiama i sarcofagi dei “vecchi saggi”, furono scoperti dall'archeologo peruviano Federico Kauffmann, che li fece conoscere al mondo nel 1984. I sarcofagi, che dagli studi effettuati vengono fatti risalire al XV° secolo (poco prima della conquista degli Inca), ricordano il contorno di un corpo umano, hanno l'aspetto di una grande capsula, alta 2,5 metri, realizzata impastando argilla, piccole pietre, paglia e scarti di legno. Le mummie di persone importanti venivano sepolte in questi sarcofagi, collocati all'interno in posizione fetale, avvolti in bozzolo fatto da sottili canne legate con la corda . Le capsule funebri sono dipinte di bianco, e decorate con pigmenti giallo ocra e rossi, che definiscono alcuni particolari, come le tuniche piumate. Su alcune delle teste si trova un teschio umano, forse un trofeo di guerra, fiera testimonianza dei guerrieri delle nubi.
