La pianura ed i monti del territorio di Vairano furono abitati da tempi antichissimi, certamente già dall'età della pietra, anche se mancano ritrovamenti specifici. Numerose sono, invece, le scoperte di materiali neolitici ed eneolitici: sul monte Catreola, fu ritrovato un raschiatoio di selce marrone rossastra,un altro ritrovamento, di età eneolitica, fu fatto sul Montauro. Nell'età del bronzo (XVIII-XI a.C.) si ha notizia di un villaggio situato ai piedi del monte Catreola. Nell'età del bronzo (XVIII-XI a.C.) si ha notizia di un villaggio situato ai piedi del monte Catreola. Il villaggio era formato da un agglomerato di capanne realizzate con frasche e argilla, e la sua esistenza è testimoniata dallo sterminato cocciame sparso su una vasta superficie. Risalenti probabilmente all'età del ferro (VIII-VII sec. a. C.), sono alcune necropoli ritrovate ai piedi del monte Catreola nei pressi del colle Vrecciale ed alcuni corredi funebri ritrovati nelle necropoli di Marzanello e della Corvara. Nel V e IV secolo a.C., i Sanniti occuparono il territorio degli Opici (primi popoli presenti in queste terre) fondando la civiltà Osco-Sannita. I Sanniti costruirono sui monti una serie di centri fortificati come risultano dai resti delle fortificazioni presenti sul Montauro, Catreola e Monteforte. Vairano Patenora - Castello Nel 290 a.C. alla fine della III° guerra sannitica, tutto il territorio passa ai Romani che lo danno in gestione ai Sidicini: è il periodo della "pax romana". Dal VI, IX secolo d.C. Vairano fu dominata dai Longobardi; mentre, nell' XI secolo, dai Normanni, che costruirono la prima fortezza di proprietà della Regia Corona del Re. Il 20 maggio del 1191 l'imperatore Enrico VI di Svevia concesse il castello a Roffredo dell'Isola, abate di Montecassino. I vairanesi rifiutarono il vassallaggio e nel 1193, al comando del conte Ruggero di Chieti, respinsero l'assedio dell'abate Roffredo. A ricordo dell'assedio vittoriosamente sostenuto e respinto, Vairano fece incidere intorno al suo stemma il motto glorioso: " Vairanum impugnans in nullo profecit" ossia: "Assediando Vairano non ottenne nulla". Nel 1229 il Castello di Vairano fu visitato dall'imperatore Federico II, il 24 maggio 1272 dal re Carlo I d'Angiò e successivamente (1271-1276) dal papa Gregorio X. Successivamente vi soggiornò anche Carlo II detto lo Zoppo. Nell'agosto del 1437 il castello di Vairano fu saccheggiato dalle rapaci orde del Patriarca Vitellesco al soldo di papa Eugenio IV. Durante la lotta tra Ferrante I d'Aragona, Re di Napoli, e il pretendente al trono Giovanni d'Angiò, il castello di Vairano, fedele al sovrano aragonese, agli inizi di febbraio del 1460 fu assediato dalle truppe angioine, ma, come nel 1193 riuscì a resistere all'assedio. Nel 1461 fu parzialmente distrutto da Marino Marzano, impegnato in un conflitto con il re Ferrante d'Aragona. Il castello attuale fu ristrutturato, tra il 1491 e il 1503, dal barone Innico II d'Avalos che temeva la discesa di Carlo VIII. Nel 1590 per la somma di 41020 ducati, Vairano fu acquistato dal barone Antonio Mormile di Frignano e rimase nelle mani della sua famiglia fino all'abolizione del feudalesimo (1806). L'ultimo barone di Vairano fu Michele Mormile, morto il 3 maggio 1820.
