Al termine dell'asse centrale del Cimitero, si trova il Tempio Crematorio che, sebbene non più in uso, costituisce una significativa testimonianza del positivismo ottocentesco e della sua fede nel valore della scienza. La costruzione è dovuta alla munificenza di Alberto Keller (1800-1874, Reparto Acattolici Edicola 1), attivo nel commercio e nell'industria della seta, che aveva stanziato una cospicua somma affinché a Milano fosse introdotta la pratica della cremazione in base a studi maturati in seno all'Università di Padova e sostenuti dall'interessamento del locale Istituto Lombardo di Scienze e Lettere. Considerata segno di maturità e civiltà per una società moderna capace di conciliare la novità della scienza con il rispetto delle tradizioni più antiche, la cremazione si scontrava all'epoca, contro il dogma cattolico della "resurrezione della carne", così che la sua introduzione all'interno del Monumentale ne rafforzava il significato di luogo attento alle esigenze dei vari credo religiosi ma anche dei vari convincimenti ideologici. Nel 1876, a due anni dalla morte di Alberto Keller, il Tempio Crematorio (regalato al Comune di Milano) veniva quindi inaugurato con una solenne cerimonia per la cremazione delle spoglie del defunto-donatore. La notizia fu riportata con grande risalto dai giornali dell'epoca. Di fatto Milano fu la prima in Italia e tra le prime in Europa ad adottare la pratica crematoria, diventando quindi un modello, presto imitato, da altre città ed altri paesi.
