L'Arma dei Carabinieri nasce il 13 luglio 1814, quando il sovrano del Regno Sardo-Piemontese Vittorio Emanuele I, con la promulgazione delle Regie Patenti, istituì a Torino il Corpo dei Carabinieri Reali. Si trattava di una novità assoluta: un'istituzione con la duplice funzione della difesa dello Stato e della tutela della sicurezza pubblica, quale organismo di polizia con speciali doveri e prerogative. Dal Piemonte, dove è nata in quel lontano 1814, sino al Lazio, dove arrivò nel 1870, l'Arma ha accompagnato, con la sua presenza vigile e rassicurante, generazioni di italiani, vivendo da protagonista tutti gli eventi storici che hanno caratterizzato la vita del Regno Sabaudo e, successivamente, del Regno d'Italia e della Repubblica Italiana, fino agli impegni internazionali odierni per la pace e la sicurezza. La fedeltà è sempre stata una caratteristica dell'Arma. Il suo motto araldico è "Nei Secoli Fedele", inizialmente ideato come contrassegno antonomastico dal Capitano Cenisio Fusi per la medaglia commemorativa del primo centenario dell'Istituzione e divenuto motto ufficiale nel maggio del 1932, dopo che una legge aveva concesso l'uso dei motti araldici ai Reggimenti e ai Corpi dell'Esercito. Proprio da quella legge nascerà, nel 1935, il primo stemma araldico dell'Arma, che successivamente ha conosciuto altre quattro versioni, l'ultima delle quali, quella del 2002, recupera tutti gli elementi delle precedenti, quasi a sottolineare la continuità istituzionale nella storia. Alla fedeltà, ancora, sono ispirate la marcia d'ordinanza ("La Fedelissima") e la celeste Patrona, Maria "Virgo Fidelis", alla quale Sua Santità Pio XII, nel 1949, scelse di affidare i Carabinieri, fissandone la ricorrenza al 21 novembre. L'anniversario di fondazione del- l'Istituzione, invece, si festeggia il 5 giugno, data di concessione, nel 1920, della prima Medaglia d'Oro al Valor Militare alla Bandiera.
