La cattedrale dei Santi Pietro e Paolo è la chiesa più antica di San Pietroburgo ed è legata a doppio filo sia alla storia della città sia a quella dei Romanov visto che qui sono custodite le spoglie dei governanti russi da Pietro il Grande in poi. Edificata originariamente in legno appena un mese dopo la fondazione di San Pietroburgo, nel 1712 fu ricostruita in pietra secondo i dettami dell'architetto Domenico Trezzini, l'architetto italo svizzero al quale si deve l'invenzione dell' stile architettonico barocco petrino. La sua costruzione si protrasse per oltre 20 anni e fu consacrata nel 1733. La Cattedrale di Pietro e Paolo ha segnato una svolta radicale rispetto chiese tradizionali ortodosse: la sua forma rettangolare, il campanile, e la guglia sono tutte caratteristiche prese in prestito dalle chiese protestanti dell'Europa occidentale ed evidenti segni dell'influenza dell'architettura olandese. La guglia è stata ricoperta nuovamente d'oro nel 2002 e domina incontrastata la città con i suoi 123 metri d'altezza. Proprio per la sua altezza è stata spesso vittima di fulmini, e in particolare fu avvolta da un incendio particolarmente grave la notte tra il 29 e il 30 aprile 1756. Nel 1766, Caterina la Grande ordinò che il campanile fosse ricostruito esattamente nelle sue sembianze originarie e 10 anni dopo, nel 1776, fu inaugurata la nuova torre. L'interno della cattedrale ha una iconostasi fantastica e fu completata da un gruppo di più di quaranta architetti. Le pareti della cattedrale sono impreziosite da dipinti di vari temi biblici, tra cui spiccano le storie evangeliche eseguite da artisti del 18° secolo. La maggior parte dei governanti Romanov di Russia sono sepolti all'interno della cattedrale dei Santi Pietro e Paolo in tombe monumentali di marmo bianco; quelle di Alessandro II e della moglie sono di diaspro verde e quarzo rosa. La tomba di Pietro i Grande, ancora venerata da migliaia di persone, si trova nella parte anteriore destra.
