San Martino del Carso, a front line area during the First World War, a memorial stone to the 4th Hungarian Nagyvarad infantry regiment. Just in these days the commemorations of the centenary of the end of the great conflict are ending, which, after reading the data on the losses, without using euphemisms, we could define an authentic slaughterhouse. The sign placed next to the photographed cippus reported the reasons why it was erected: "The last action coincided with the beginning of the sixth battle of the Isonzo on August 6th 1916, Colonel Karoly Kratochwill commander of the regiment deployed a contingent of 3,000 men, for four long days they faced repeated attacks by Italian units, until on August 10, the last of Doberdò's defenders, the 200 surviving soldiers began to retreat after allowing the artillerymen to carry the batteries to safety. " , nothing to add except a thought in memory of all those who in spite of themselves were drawn into that madness. A curiosity, the Hungarian flag has the same colors as the Italian flag, the Tricolor ribbons hanging from the monument are a memory left by visitors from Hungary .

The shot is very nice and the caption makes much think, even in the light of what happened in the following years, the damned useless of wars!
Congratulations Silvano!

Thanks Massimo, today we live like there was no tomorrow, but I think remembering these events, what they were and what they begat is the moral duty of every person endowed with a minimum of common sense, if each one in his little.... etc. etc. etc.

Great and duteful tribute. My grandfather "boy of 99" was fortunate enough to return to the distant Calabria. An experience that has marked him forever.

Thanks for the comment Francis, in all the evil of that conflict one of the few positive things was the feeling of a people united by a feeling of national pride.
Given the geographic proximity, I happen often enough to visit the shrines of Redipuglia and Caporetto, and I see the surnames on gravestones, there is really represented all Italy, you really understand how great and generous was the contribution Of the southern regions, but as you know the memory is labile......
A greeting

I pay homage, always, with respect and emotion, to the fallen of the "Great War".
The grandfather, class 1898, if he did it all, mostly in the trenches, on the Grappa; three times wounded he managed to return and, for years, told me the events that marked him forever. What I remember most about his stories was the only obligation, the sense of duty and the absence of the "enemy" to witness the stupidity of any conflict.
He always said "... we poor boys....." with no distinction for the color of the uniform.
Thanks to your sensibility, Silvano, you gave me the opportunity to commemorate my dearest grandfather and all the little heroes of a hundred years ago.
Mandi.

Thank you Paul, a comment really felt your, as your grandfather said he had suffered on his skin "... we poor boys.....".
was a terrible thing on the whole front, but to give you a more precise idea about the place of the photo, if you took a topographical map of the area and pointing the compass on the monument traced a circle of 10 km radius, in the area of that circle from 1915 to 1917 for They sero the 1 million lives of soldiers, and believe me it's not speculation, it's history.

History and Remembrance. A thought to my grandfather, Cavalier of Vittorio Veneto. He didn't want to hear about the Austro-Hunicians.
then everything passes.
Very nice photo!

* Maurizio, thanks for the passage and the commentary.
* Franco What to say, it is humanly understandable that the grandfather did not want to hear even speak of the Austro-Hungarian soldiers, but also they (like ours) were victims of decisions of the wicked taken at high levels, in which the people of the old Europe They slaughtered each other, earning us (as in every conflict) were only those who sold their weapons..... , we should take this into account every time we see "certain clouds" on the horizon.
* Thanks Mauro, the futurists were saying
"war, only hygiene in the world"
, it's around there's still someone who thinks so, in our little what we can do is keep up the memory of those unfortunate events, with the hope that they do not happen Never again, but unfortunately the world is full of proxy wars.
A greeting
