Proprietà dello Stato solo dal 1986, la Villa dei Quintili era la più grande e fastosa residenza del suburbio romano. Il nucleo originario apparteneva ai fratelli Quintili, consoli nel 151 d.C. ed è stato ampliato quando la villa è divenuta proprietà imperiale con l'imperatore Commodo. Commodo amava risiedervi a causa della tranquillità della campagna e dei benefici dei bagni termali presenti nella villa. La villa si estende tra l'Appia Antica e la Via Appia Nuova ed è costruita attorno ad una grande piazza. Il nucleo edilizio più imponente è quello composto dagli ambienti padronali e per la servitù: un edificio circolare, una serie di stanze e le due grandi aule termali del calidario e del frigidario, alte quattordici metri, con ampie finestre e marmi policromi. Il complesso monumentale si affaccia a terrazze sulla campagna romana ed offre un panorama che ha ispirato nel tempo molti celebri artisti.
