Il santuario della Rocca, chiamato anticamente sac?ta Maria de Arce, di origine medievale, lega il suo nome e le vicende più antiche che lo riguardano al vicino fortilizio,emblema di Tolfa ieri e oggi. E' sem?pre stato dedicato alla Madonna e per la popolazio?ne di Tolfa Vecchia è rimasto sin dai primordi un luogo di speciale devozione mariana. In origine, nella chiesetta vicina al Castello si ve?nerava una statua della Madonna e vi si celebrava la festa dell'Assunta, oltre il popolare rito propiziatorio delle Rogazioni. Dal 1695 vi fu poi collocata l'im?magine oggi da tutti conosciuta della Vergine della Pietà con i santi Bartolomeo ed Emidio. Dopo il periodo medievale, la chiesa della Rocca subì un momento di declino nelle sue strutture; nei documenti si intuisce la necessità del rifacimento del tetto. Provvi?denzialmente, nel 1567, fu restaurata a spese della Comunità su istanza della Confraternita del Nome di Dio, sodalizio legato all'Ordine dei Predicatori (Do?menicani) che proprio in quel periodo veniva istituito anche a Tolfa. Nel 1695, come già accennato, l'immagine della Pietà, inizialmente venerata nella chiesa di S. Giovanni (oggi scomparsa, ma di cui restano foto e ricostruzioni) fu tra?sferita alla Rocca. Nello stesso anno il cardinal Sa?vio Millini, vescovo di Sutri ordinò anche il restauro dell'altare e il “rinnovamento” dell'immagine che vi era stata posta in antico, cioè la statua collocata nella nic?chia sull'altare maggiore oggi scomparsa. Dal 1695 la chiesa, già custodita da sacerdoti eremiti e da laici romiti nominati dalla confraternita, assunse ufficialmente il nome di Ecclesia Beatae Maria Vir?gine de Pietate, per evidenziare la nuova presenza della venerata icona che ritraeva la Madre Addolo?rata con il Cristo morto in grembo tra angeli e santi, tela di scuola bolognese che si ispira alle Pietà mi?chelangiolesche e alle opere di Giovanni Francesco Gessi, pittore bolognese operante anche nel Lazio. La presenza di eremiti custodi, tra cui alcuni rive?stiti con l'abito e la spiritualità dei Servi di Maria, sin?golari propagatori della devozione all'Addolorata, è indice dell'alta considerazione di sacralità che in-vestiva il luogo mariano. Fu soprattutto uno di questi eremiti laici, fra Giuseppe Catalini a dedicarsi con straordinaria cura al santuario per l'arco di cin?quant'anni (1861-1911). Nel 1888 si fece promotore di una capillare questua per la costruzione del mae?stoso altare in marmo che custodisce la santa im?magine. Il solenne tempietto fu progettato dall'ar?tista francescano padre Cosma da Cori OFM e rea?lizzato con materiale pregiato da Ercole Alliata di Ci?vitavecchia e da Luigi Martinelli di Roma, noti arti?sti del marmo. Prezioso fu anche l'apporto di Alessandro Bar?toli, celebre raccoglitore di memorie storiche tolfe?tane, progettista del ciborio eucaristico. L'eremita Ca?talini arricchì il santuario anche della sacrestia e della via Matris (sette croci che ricordano i sette dolo?ri di Maria) ed effettuò la sistemazione della strada e di una cancellata alla porta della chiesa che permette ancora oggi l'incessante visione dell'icona ritenuta coralmente miracolosa.
