Il Colosseo o Anfiteatro Flavio è il più grande anfiteatro del mondo, situato nel centro di Roma. La sua costruzione iniziò nei primi anni del regno di Vespasiano (69 d.C.) e fu parte di un programma politico propagandistico ben preciso: sul luogo dove in precedenza sorgeva lo stagno artificiale della casa privata di Nerone- la Domus Aurea-vennero poste le fondamenta dell'anfiteatro, con lo scopo ben preciso di restituire al popolo quelli che erano gli spazi che l'ormai innominabile ed innominato Nerone si era accaparrato. I lavori durarono dieci anni e furono completati nell'80 d. C, sotto l'impero di Tito, figlio di Vespasiano. Con Sotto Domiziano, successore di Tito, si costruirono i sotterranei in muratura e moltissimi furono i restauri nel corso dei secoli, soprattutto a seguito di vari e violenti incendi. L'ultimo spettacolo di cui abbiamo notizia si svolse nel 523 d. C. Si tratta del più grande anfiteatro della romanità ed il primo in muratura dell'Urbs: l'altezza è di circa 50 m ed il diametro maggiore di 188 m! L'anello esterno, interamente in travertino, è in quattro piani sovrapposti, decorati con semicolonne in ordine rispettivamente tuscanico, ionico e corinzio. L'ultimo piano, cieco, è decorato con lesene anch'esse corinzie. Il restauro ben visibile della cinta esterna fu realizzato con dei contrafforti dal valadier nel 1820. Al di sopra delle finestre quadrate vi sono delle mensole che servivano per sostenere i pali su cui veniva fissato il velarium (un tendone per fare ombra!) Sono visibili molti fori esternamente lasciati dal saccheggio che si è fatto del ferro del monumento nel Medioevo, che non ha risparmiato neanche il travertino. Chiaramente esisteva l'ingresso d'onore per la tribuna imperiale e altri per le personalità - magistrati, Vestali, Sacerdoti etc. Più si era ricchi e potenti e più si sedeva in basso (i senatori erano i più vicini all'arena e gli unici ad avere sedili in marmo), seguendo l'ordine dei 5 settori sovrapposti in cui era articolata la cavea ed ogni categoria poteva comunque accedere solo ai posti ad essa riservati; sui gradini rimasti, si leggono ancora oggi, i nomi delle categorie cui erano destinati i posti.
