La Laterite è un suolo residuale di colore rosso scuro, ricco di ossidi di alluminio e ferro, tipico delle regioni tropicali caratterizzate da una alternanza di periodi secchi con altri molto piovosi. Il processo naturale di trasformazione superficiale di molte rocce eruttive o scistoso-cristalline (laterizzazione) avviene in seguito all'alterazione di tutti i silicati, i quali sono lisciviati insieme al carbonato di calcio. Se le rocce alterate contengono scarse quantità di ferro, l'arricchimento in alluminio porta alla formazione di depositi bauxitici che rappresentano una varietà di questo tipo di suolo. Dove il clima risulta particolarmente arido (per es., nelle savane africane) si possono formare dei crostoni o carapaci che prendono il nome di bowal. (Cit. Enciclopedia Treccani)
