La liturgia del venerdì santo della cittadina di Penne, in prov. di Pescara affonda le sue radici nel quattrocento e fu istituita ufficialmente come ricorrenza religiosa nel 1570 dal Cappuccino umbro Padre Girolamo da Montefiore. Sin dal medioevo drammi liturgici e sacre rappresentazioni, come la Passione di Cristo, si recitavano nelle chiese cittadine ed erano interpretate da chierici affiancati da statue semoventi. La presenza di un simulacro snodato del Cristo dimostra che anche nella chiesa dell'Annunziata, la principale chiesa della cittadina, era in uso recitare il dramma della Passione che, terminando con la coreografica Deposizione dalla Croce, diede origine al Venerdì Santo pennese.
