Il Bucintoro era la galea di stato dei dogi di Venezia, sulla quale si imbarcavano ogni anno nel giorno dell'Ascensione per celebrare il rito veneziano dello sposalizio con il mare. Questa è l'esemplaredel 1731, sopravvissuta e riportata allo splendore originale dal complesso restauro presso il Centro Conservazione e Restauro “La Venaria Reale” ove è esposta presso le scuderie juvarriane. È l'unica imbarcazione di lusso e rappresentanza costruita in ambito veneziano tuttora esistente, ed è quasi coeva all'ultimo Bucintoro dei Dogi, progettato da Antonio Corradini su uno scafo di galea, e varato nel 1729, di cui si conservano le immagini nei dipinti di Canaletto, Marieschi, Bella, ma soltanto qualche frammento materiale. Più piccolo di quello veneziano (poco meno di 16 metri contro i 55 di quello dogale), il bucintoro dei Savoia venne invece realizzato su uno scafo di peota, un'imbarcazione “povera”, robusta e capiente, adatta ai trasporti nella navigazione di laguna, con propulsione mista: a remi e con supporto di una vela.
