Un Papa poco conosciuto Giovanni XXI che si chiamava Pietro di Giuliano detto Pietro Spano. Nacque a Lisbona (da qui l'appellativo "spano", ispanico) fra il 1210 ed il 1220. Pietro Spano bruciò le tappe di una brillante carriera: nel 1272 fu nominato vescovo di Braga, nell'anno successivo fu creato cardinale di Tuscolo e ricoprì l'incarico di archiatra (medico papale) di papa Gregorio X, nel 1274 partecipò al secondo Concilio di Lione. Alla morte di papa Adriano V, Pietro Spano fu eletto papa nel contrastato conclave di Viterbo del 1276, con il nome di Giovanni XXI. Regnò, tuttavia, appena il tempo necessario per riconciliare Rodolfo d'Asburgo e Carlo I d'Angiò e pensare alla Crociata in Terrasanta: nei primi mesi del 1277, infatti, il papa morì a Viterbo nel crollo accidentale di un pavimento. La tomba è tuttora visibile al fondo della navata sinistra del Duomo di Viterbo. Nel maggio 2000 questa speciale tomba onorifica venne collocata nella stessa cattedrale, per volere di Giovanni Paolo II.
