Il Duomo di Cefalù è uno dei monumenti più rappresentativi dell'arte arabo-normanna in Sicilia e dal 3 luglio 2015 è stato dichiarato patrimonio dell'Umanità dall'UNESCO. Fu edificato nel 1131 per volontà di Ruggero II d'Altavilla, re di Sicilia, Puglia e Calabria, in seguito ad un voto che lo stesso re fece al Santissimo Salvatore. La leggenda narra infatti che durante un viaggio in mare da Salerno a Palermo, la nave del re si imbatté in una terribile tempesta che non faceva presagire nulla di buono. In preda al panico il re fece voto al Signore di erigere una grandissima ed imponente chiesa se lui ed il suo equipaggio si fossero salvati. Poiché la nave e tutti i suoi passeggeri giunsero sani e salvi sulle coste di Cefalù, è qui che il re decise di edificare la chiesa, a gloria del Santissimo Salvatore e dei Santi Pietro e Paolo.
