Dopo il 1981 su una Formula Ford 1600 con cui aveva disputato e vinto sia il Campionato Inglese RAC (Royal Automobile Club) che il Townsend-Thoresen con 12 vittorie, 3 pole position e 10 giri più veloci in 19 gare... Ayrton, nel 1982, passò alla Formula Ford 2000 con cui disputò sia il Campionato Britannico "Pace British" sia quello EFDA (European Formula Drivers Association) vincendoli entrambi dopo aver totalizzato 21 vittorie, 15 pole position e 22 giri più veloci nelle 29 gare disputate.
