La cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta sorge all'estremità settentrionale della città antica, in prossimità del mare. La costruzione dell'attuale edificio, sorto al posto di una precedente chiesa che compare nei documenti con il titolo di Santa Maria de Episcopio, sarebbe stata iniziata, secondo l'Ughelli, nel 1150 con l'edificazione della cripta e completata nel 1180. Solo un secolo più tardi, nel 1283 sarebbe avvenuta la consacrazione dell'intero edificio. I restauri intrapresi nel 1983 hanno riportato alla luce, nel braccio destro del transetto e nell'area presbiteriale, insieme ad una grande quantità di frammenti scultorei di plutei e transenne, i resti dell'originaria pavimentazione musiva, ad una profondità di circa mezzo metro al di sotto dell'attuale pavimento.
