La Route 66 , inaugurata nel 1926 , è una highway , strada a carattere nazionale statunitense . Originariamente collegava Chicago nell' Illinois alla spiaggia di Santa Monica a Los Angeles in California attraverso gli stati Illinois , Missouri , Kansas , Oklahoma , Texas , Nuovo Messico , Arizona e California . La distanza complessiva era di 3755 km. La US Route 66 fu ufficialmente rimossa dal sistema delle highway nel 1985 , quando assieme alle altre fu rimpiazzata dallo Interstate Highway System . La strada esiste attualmente con il nome di Historic Route 66 . È così tornata sulle mappe in questa veste . La Route 66 è stata immortalata anche nella letteratura , musica e televisione statunitense . Nel 1946 il compositore jazz e pianista Bobby Troup scrisse la sua famosa ( Get Your Kicks On ) Route 66 , dopo aver percorso di persona la highway per andare in California . Egli mostrò la canzone a Nat King Cole che la fece diventare uno dei più grandi singoli della sua carriera .
