Era la fine di un'altra giornata nella steppa patagonica, un'altra giornata in cui avevo fatto un altro bel fiasco nella mia ricerca del puma e in cui me ne stavo tornando al campeggio abbastanza demoralizzato.. Il caso vuole che lungo la strada noto due persone che stavano guardando apparentemente il panorama dalla cima di una collinetta; non ci faccio granché caso sul momento visto che molta gente si ferma ad ogni curva ad ammirare le montagne del Torres del Paine (per un buon motivo direi!). Venti secondi dopo, con la coda dell'occhio vedo all'interno di una cunetta vicino alla strada una forma strana, una sorta di “gattone”: in qualche millisecondo faccio 2+2 e inchiodo.. Era lui! Era un puma! Si era accovacciato in questa rientranza per controllare un branco di guanaco in un campo vicino.. Mi attrezzo di macchinetta e mi butto in terra al volo.. A mo' di militare, con molta calma e cautela, cerco di avvicinarmi quanto più possibile strisciando con i gomiti.. Non mi stava considerando neanche di striscio, il suo unico obiettivo erano i guanaco, ed onestamente non avevo neanche molta paura.. Sentivo di aver la situazione sotto controllo. Arrivato ad un punto in cui ero davvero vicino, lui con un'eleganza unica di gira verso di me e mi lancia quest'occhiata (quella in foto), uno sguardo durato un secondo ma per me un'eternità, che ho preso per un avvertimento (della serie “ti ho visto, stai attento”) e che mi ha fatto indietreggiare molto velocemente. Nel frattempo il branco di guanaco si era allontanato e lui silenziosamente si è buttato nella steppa per seguirli. Che esperienza! So che la foto è rumorosa, era praticamente buio quindi ho dovuto alzare gli iso per mantenere tempi accettabili.
