A partire dal 1967 l'Autodelta inizia lo sviluppo di una versione da competizione della nuova 1750 GT Veloce, con l'intenzione di gareggiare nei campionati turismo e prendere parte ai rally debuttando nelle competizioni dal 1969. La 1750 GTAm e le 2000 GTAm sono modelli usciti dall'Autodelta utilizzando come base la 1750 GT Veloce sia in versioni Europa (serie 105.44) dotate di carburatori, che in versioni America (serie 105.51) dotate di iniezione. Frequentemente anche versioni Europa dotate di iniezione Spica. Nel 1971, per contrastare le nuove vetture della BMW, l'Autodelta preparò ulteriormente la GT Am, aumentandone la cilindrata a 2000 cm³ (mantenendo la base della 1750 GT Veloce America). Le specifiche tecniche sono sostanzialmente identiche a quelle della 1750 GT Am, fatta esclusione per il peso incrementato a 940 kg (imposto dalla FIA) e la potenza maggiorata a 220-230 CV, per una velocità di punta di 230–240 km/h.
