My Deckchair, My Garden, My Birthday Gift... sent on July 21, 2018 (18:16) by Timk2. 26 comments, 1966 views. [retina]

at 195mm, 1/20 f/8.0, ISO 400, hand held. Salisbury, United Kingdom.

For my birthday, I have bought myself a brand new Tamron 100-400mm VC USD lens. Apart from the evening when I received it, we've had no sunshine, so I have not been able to try it out again. This lens replaces my old, tatty and of questionable build/optical quality (bought cheaply from a friend) Sigma 120-400mm HSM Apo OS, which HAS served me well, until I could afford to replace it. This Sigma has technology from 2005, the new Tamron launched just last year has the latest in full and so is 600g lighter, better built and much more importantly, image quality vastly improved. I certainly considered the new Sigma 100-400mm, but rather stupidly, by not having any means to attach a tripod collar, means that experienced enthusiasts will reject it immediately. True, the Tamron's collar is a very expensive Extra, but it is being offered at half price if bought with the lens. But, at least it is an option, doubling its uses. The image, taken at just 1/20 second handheld at 195mm, f8, in my communal gardens at sunset light is not a great image, hopefully it will show the clarity and colours available with this new lens, that, apart from the slightly slower f6.3 maximum aperture at 400mm, can compete with the two thousand pound Nikon equivalent, which is three times the price.

I took the moon/cloud shot already posted, also handheld, an hour later after this one.
