Una bella femmina di Vipera aspis francisciredi rinvenuta nel Parco dei Monti Lucretili, questi animali, timidi e schivi, difficilmente reagiscono mordendo alla presenza dell'uomo. Il metodo di difesa adottato dalle vipere è infatti il mimetismo, seguito dalla fuga, e solo in mancanza di alternative dall'attacco. Inoltre al contrario di quanto molti credono ,il reale rischio per la propria vita in caso di morso è molto basso, meno del 10% dei casi di morso in Europa risulta fatale, e di solito questi sfortunati eventi coinvolgono bambini (sotto i 20 kg) o anziani dalla salute già compromessa. La cosa migliore da fare se ne incontriamo una è ammirarla a distanza o spostarla delicatamente con un bastone se è proprio necessario.
