Le cicale sono insetti normalmente di grandi dimensioni, con il corpo di forma tozza, la testa considerevolmente larga con due paia di ali trasparenti e membranose che a riposo vengono tenute a tetto al di sopra del corpo. La lunghezza si aggira intorno ai 2-4 cm. Vivono sugli alberi di diversa specie e sulla vegetazione. Le cicale sono celebri soprattutto per il canto dei loro maschi che emettono un suono stridente e monotono. Il suono prodotto è alto, continuo e stridulo. Gli organi stridulanti (timballi) sono situati ventralmente all'inizio dell'addome, quasi sempre protetti da un paio di larghe piastre protettive, gli opercoli; sollevati gli opercoli ci sono due cavità per ciascun lato: una più grande ventrale, ed una più piccola laterale. All'interno sono presenti sottili membrane e dei sacchi aerei. Un paio di poderosi muscoli striati -fra i più potenti descritti nel Regno Animale- si collegano alla membrana e contraendosi producono vibrazioni da cui deriva il suono. Le femmine depongono le uova entro i tessuti vegetali provocando spesso delle deformazioni dette galle e pseudogalle. L'alimento sia negli adulti che nelle larve è costituito da linfa e succhi vegetali di vari alberi; possiedono, infatti, un apparato boccale di tipo pungitore-succhiatore. Le larve delle cicale sono sotterranee e possiedono zampe anteriori scavatrici grazie alle quali si spostano da una radice all'altra per nutrirsi. La larva della specie descritta ha uno sviluppo preimmaginale che dura ben quattro anni: al termine, la ninfa matura lascia il terreno e ne sfarfalla l'adulto. Hanno antenne molto corte e 3 ocelli.
