In alto a sinistra è possibile osservare lo stato di tanatosi, ovvero la morte simulata dall'animale, grazie alla posizione del corpo (con il ventre esposto) e la bocca aperta a mostrare la lingua, spesso accompagnata da emorrea, il tutto è reso ancor più verosimile dall'emissione di un secreto maleodorante dalle ghiandole anali che ricorda l'odore di un corpo in decomposizione. Tale strategia viene utilizzata dalle specie del genere Natrix per scoraggiare eventuali predatori, che davanti ad un animale già parzialmente decomposto spesso decidono di abbandonare la caccia.
